Oh by the way, just to let you know – Leechon was nominated for “Best Design” – You have to simply choose which blog in your opinion has the most aesthetically pleasing site design, appealing to the eye, evoking Islamic themes, and/or facilitating debate and discussion.

The following is taken from the website;
The Brass Crescent Awards, a joint project of altmuslim and City of Brass, is an annual awards ceremony that honors the best writers and thinkers of the emerging Muslim blogosphere (aka the Islamsphere). Nominations are taken from blog readers, who then vote for the winners.
What are the Brass Crescent Awards? They are named for the Story of the City of Brass in the Thousand and One Nights. Today, the Islamsphere is forging a new synthesis of Islam and modernity, and is the intellectual heir to the traditions of philosophy and learning that was once the hallmark of Islamic civilization – a heritage scarcely recognizable today in the Islamic world after a century’s ravages of colonialism, tyrants, and religious fundamentalism. We believe that Islam transcends history, and we are forging history anew for tomorrow’s Islam. These awards are a means to honor ourselves and celebrate our nascent community, and promote its growth.

UPDATE: A correction from bedou (a commentator)
Just so you know, The Boston Globe itself did not cover the events. Instead, The Big Picture, which you link to here, was a blog started by a member of their staff, which really deserves the credit here. Many consider it to be the blog of the year; it’s curated so excellently by a staff of one, and the large images really do provide greater insight into the subjects being presented.
The photographs themselves are culled together from all the different wire and image services, as attributed in the credits.

The other day I got an email that stated the following;
Salaams Brother Belal,
My name is Kashif Pasta and I’m a 17-year-old Muslim filmmaker from Vancouver, Canada.
First off, I wanted to thank you for all that you’ve done so far in the English-Islamic media space. I am especially excited to see Tufaan, which looks like a fantastic doc that really has the potential to change a lot of lives.
I am emailing you because this past summer I was involved in a issue-based Arts initiative called the Surrey Urban Youth Project. All participants were allowed to do a project using any art form they felt comfortable with to encourage discussion about issues that affected them. Being a filmmaker, I, of course, took this opportunity to use film to convey my message.
When it came down to doing the project and I had decided that the idea of a short film was out of reach at that moment, I remembered how hard-hitting and great your Leechon GemReels were. So I decided to take that as inspiration and do my own! The film got a great response at the live show we did, and ended up on TV that night since there was a pretty big station was in attendance that enjoyed it. Anyways, i just wanted to send the link your way for you to take a look at, thanks for your time and all your effort!
Assalamu Alaikum,
-Kashif Pasta
The following video titled, “To Know One Another” is what Kashif produced.
Jazakallahu Khairun for your kind words Kashif. The honor is mine, kowing that I’ve helped inspire someone along the way and inshaAllah that inspiration will lead to other people doing positive things to benefit Islam, Muslims and humanity.
Check out Kashif’s other work and give him continued encouragement to progress in his work:

In August I posted about the Nikon D90′s release and how it seemed like an interesting product. This time around professional filmmaker Matthew Bennett made a short narrative style video titled “Subway” demonstrating what can be done with such a camera:
Imagine being about to shoot anywhere you want to without people getting upset that you’re carrying a professional camera around. Usually in public places such as a subway station, security will get on your case for not having a permit if you’ve got a real camera on you. Imagine becoming invisible and avoiding all of that! — The D90 allows you to be just that.
There’s a discussion going on about this over at DVXUser forum about the video posted: D90 Footage – quick test in Toronto subway
How many cameras on the market (or about to be on the market) can produce quality such as that or better? – Let me know!
