Trailer Frenzy

Posted November 14, 06 by AlBaraa

Having enjoyed making the Islam Invulnerable video, In November 05 I decided to make more. This time I had an alternate goal in mind:

  1. Make a cool trailer for the Conquest seminar
  2. Motivate people to get in on making trailers for future seminars :-)

After I made this trailer excitement grew withing the AlMaghrib community. Shorty after this video (Dec 05) Sensei requested that I make a one minute trailer that would be displayed at the RIS conference. The challenge was to make something visually appealing for a crowd of 15,000 that would keep the name “AlMaghrib” stuck in their minds. The following was the result:

I think it did its job. The reaction and feedback was quite positive and it got people curious enough to come to the AlMaghrib and Eman Rush booth. After this trailer went online people got motivated to start making trailers for other seminars. Goal achieved!

:-)

January 2006, I decided to make one more trailer. Fiqh of Love! After having completed about 80% of the trailer. I was presented with an obstacle. Lack of motivation. I didn’t find it a challenge any more, and it seemed redundant. In the end I completed the video at the request of Mostafa.

Lesson: To grow you need challenges. You need a standard. If you reach it, set a new one. If you don’t then you will lose the drive and motivation to move forward. Set a target and aim above it!

Islam Invulnerable

Posted November 14, 06 by AlBaraa

Back in August 05, my man Mostafa (Ameer Durbah) emailed me a PowerPoint presentation to put up online for promotional purposes for the upcoming AlMaghrib seminar which was Islam Invulnerable. When I opened up the presentation, one thing was clear to me. — I wouldn’t represent AlMaghrib with that presentation even if someone paid me to do it.

In a just world, the one who suggests the idea is the one to implement it. I hit up GettyImages and got any and all appropriate pictures that I could and began editing. Eight hours later I ended up with the following:

Lesson/Reflection

When you become efficient at something that you love to do, you find ways to become creative with it. That creativity can be used to bring benefit to those around you if you wish.

Mufti’s Crusade

Posted November 13, 06 by AlBaraa

My man Mufti had visited Masjid AlAqsa during the summer of 2005. When he came back he wanted to present his trip to the rest of his friends. As the YM Teaneck coordinator I helped him in this aspect. One night we got together at my place, designed the flyer for the event. That night I made the “trailer” for it.

I used footage from Kingdom of Heaven and Batman Begins to make the trailer with voice over from your very own :)

This trailer was completed in about four hours. That is what I call efficiency.

One major project lesson that I learned was a marketing technique. If you want to market an event or a product at a convention, print out a bunch of fliers and get plenty of double sided tape. Grab any many youth as you can to be “volunteers”. Stick the flyer on their back and have them walk around the convention hall. If you have enough guys doing this…it really gets the image out there.
