First Pass Assembly Edit Of Intro

Reading time: 2 – 2 minutes

I just finished up the first pass assembly edit of the intro sequence for the next episode of Browntourage.

If you haven’t been following along, the reason for this trip was to attend a seminar hosted by Film Specific called Going Global Bootcamp. Read about it here:

I want your feedback as to what you want to see in the upcoming Browntourage episode. NOTE: this assembly edit doesn’t include any post processing of enhancing the image and having it properly fill the screen. All that will be address in the coming passes and edits.

In this episode is the story of my trip to Los Angeles. The things I’m considering including:

  • Hanging out with Baba Ali
  • Chilling with my host and his kids
  • Hiking up Mt. Lee – up to where the hollywood sign is
  • Breakfast with the 3D Poet Hossein
  • Chess match with my host and Mahdi
  • Photos I shot while I was there

What are something that you want to see in the video from among what I’ve mentioned and what I haven’t.

Ok, media with an Islamic framework…may be you can investigate the permissibility of playing chess games in Islam…

And sound effects that are so like music that it becomes difficult to distinguish.

    Apologies, don’t intend to discourage.

    JazakAllahu Khair,

  2. AlBaraa Says:

Jazakallahu khairun for your comment Amatullah -

RE Chess and Sound Score –
If you wish to learn more about the background of what I follow and the proofs of why I follow it – you’re welcome to post regarding this subject in a more appropriate domain (ie: messagemastery.com members area) where I can refer you to my sources and research I did on the topic with my teachers and inshaAllah you can follow the opinion that inshaAllah is the strongest to you.

From my experience talking about this issue (which is off-topic from the intent of the post) usually bring forth un-needed argument by people.

Rest assured that the sound score include no musical instruments. All sound are made from the mouth.

    Back to topic
Along with the original question stated in the post, what are three words that come to mind when you watch the intro?

  3. Anon Says:

Why is this video and the first one called browntourage?

  4. AlBaraa Says:

“Browntourage” is what I’m calling the series. Each episode will have it’s own name inshaAllah.

I think I’m going to call this episode “Hollywoodland”

  5. Arshada Says:

I have watched both episodes. Just confused where you are going with this. Also, sounds like it is spinning the feel of the HBO show Entourage, which doesn’t seem original.

Love all your other stuff, first time I felt like this about any of your videos…

  6. AlBaraa Says:

In truth – I’ve never seen HBO’s Entourage – so I can’t comment on that :-) – What are some factors that seem like its “spinning” the feel of the show? Correct me if I’m wrong, all I know is that its about some movie producer and the drama around the business.

The video clip that’s posted here isn’t the full episode, just the intro sequence.

  7. hk Says:

what are three words that come to mind when you watch the intro?

diversity. travels. deenin-fun (ok, so that’s not a word, but i don’t know how else to put it).

  8. AlBaraa Says:

    btw Arshad,
The premise of Browntourage its highlighting my travels in an entertaining way as well as giving some value to the viewers to benefit from.

  9. Mahdi Ahmad Says:

    As-salaamu alaikum,

I look forward to the episode insha Allah!

    Mahdi

  10. Arshada Says:

    Belal,

I watched few episodes some time ago. Entourage has a fast pace feel with various stories going on at the same time. The guys are hanging out, giving each other a hard time & having funny moments.

I think all video your have always had a call, purpose they were calling for. Browntourage didn’t, at least to me.

It was purely entertaining to see what happened next.

    Take care man

  11. AlBaraa Says:

    @Arshad -

Thanks for the insight. I admit, the first episode of Browntourage there was more focus on entertainment than an actual call to action. Personally, I want to add more value than just entertainment and I feel that people want more than just an entertaining video journal.

    What do you suggest?

  12. shirien Says:

back in the days of jahilayyah, there was a soap opera called “sunset beach” set place in cali. This kind of reminds me of that. If you even turn the sound off, it looks like you could enter cheesy saxophone music lol.

I think Arshada makes somewhat a good point. I think the entertaining factor is good, but perhaps add more substance, add more interviews and maybe discuss a topic.

I dont know if you ever watch things like conan o’brian or even oprah. but Conan might go out on the street, show the audience funny moments or things of that town, then interview people there.

Even reports on oprah, they’ll go to a location and tell someone’s story.

I think it could be entertaining but might add value if you actually report on something.

    wallahu alem.

  13. bedou Says:

    AlBaraa,

I can’t really muster three words from that little snippet, but I would recommend you try to edit without the use of the sounds. The art of editing is all about establishing a rhythm through the use of cutting. When you start of with a rhythm (in this case, the beats), you end up cutting to that preset rhythm, instead of artfully discovering your own.

Remember, that for the most part, the score of a film comes after it has been edited, so the rhythm of the film is set before any music is written for it. One of the greatest editors, Walter Murch, edits without even the sound on while editing. He establishes a rhythm for the scene, then turns the sound on to make sure the dialogue flows.

I may be a classicist in this sense, but imagine for a second that you didn’t have Premiere or and Avid machine in front of you. Imagine you had to edit by cutting strips of film together. What would be different? You’d think a HECK of a lot more about every single edit you make. Just look at the immense editing work that is found in the decades preceding modern non-linear editors. Not that such editing doesn’t exist today, but those that do accomplish a high-level of excellence are those who really think their editing through, and not just point and click away with the razor tool.

  14. AlBaraa Says:

    @Bedou,

I totally understand what you’re saying re editing and I must admit that Walter Murch is my hero when it comes to the craft of editing – hands down. I’ve actually put together a session on editing based on his teachings for MessageMastery memebrs (haven’t uploaded it yet).

As I’ve come to learn, there are two types of editing approaches:

One rhythm is story driven, and the other is sound driven. In the context of telling a story in an actual movie and short-story, the primary driver of the decision for the cut targeting the right emotion-story-rhythm (in that order) is on the editor for sure.

The other rhythm is audio driven, which is the case when it comes to many commercials and trailers. In the case of the intro, I decided to go with this approach since its the easiest and quickest way to grab the attention of the viewer (IMHO).

The rest of episode I’m using the “classic” approach for sure, but to answer your question – If I had to edit on an actual film strip, I personally wouldn’t edit at all :P – I’d stick to my guns and just focus on the development, distribution and marketing of the film. I guess in the classic sense you can call me a “suit” :D

It is solely due to the ease of using NLE systems like Avid, FCP and Premiere that I got into the editing craft – which I’m slowly backing out of to get back to focusing on my strengths and have more dedicated editors approach the editing stand that take the tried and true classic approach to the craft – like yourself :D

  15. Sister Says:

Islamic framework? Amatullah is right .

You are an evident self-promoter Mr. “Brown” Affleck as you called yourself. Just looking at all the comments, 90% (and I’m being generous here) of this stuff is laghw–useless talk–saxophone music and rhythm for movies.. subhaan Allah people stop wasting your time here.

Please take my husband off your email list. He told you once before, he is not interested in your work at all.

  16. AlBaraa Says:

Jazakallahu khairun for your comment sister – You and your husband are welcome to “unsubscribe” for the email. All of them have that option at the bottom when they’re sent out.

  17. Sister Says:

We never subscribed in the first place. Please don’t burden yourself with subscribing him yourself again.

    Jazzak Allahu khair.

  18. AlBaraa Says:

Someone did – anyway. I’ve taken him off manually. He won’t be receiving any more emails from me. If there is any other way I can be of service let me know inshaAllah. – Again, jazakallahu khairun :-)

  19. another sis Says:

    Sister,

    Ittaqillah,

I think there are more appropriate and kinder ways to give someone naseeha. You came off as very rude, although you may or may not have intended to do so. Wallahi would you speak so harshly with a non-Muslim that way? If so, subhanallah wallahu alem but it seems as it would drive people away from the deen.

People may have knowledge but what good is the knowledge without conveying it in a gentle manner. Wallahi i think that a lot of people forget the importance of gentleness in their words.

Jarir bin `Abdullah (Raddi Allahu Anhu) reported: Messenger of Allah (sallalahualayhi wa sallam) said, “He who is deprived of forbearance and gentleness is, in fact, deprived of all good.”
    [Muslim].”

`Aishah (Raddi Allahu Anha) reported: The Prophet (salallahualayhi wa sallam) said, “Whenever gentleness is added to something, it adorns it; and whenever it is withdrawn from something, it leaves it defective.”
    [Muslim].

So before we sit on our high throne, I think it’s important to take a step back and then commence our talk with husul khuluq.

May Allah guide us all. Ameen.

  20. Jawaad Ahmad Khan Says:

    Salaam,

alhamdulillah…I like the amount of discussion happening here…

    for the video:
creation/beauty (of allah). travel. and brotherhood.

personally, I think a lot of your work (including this introduction) has to be audio-driven since you are a marketer and your work deals with trailers and promos and things like that that have to grab people’s attention and then bring them into the substance (i.e. the event or seminar or browntourage episode).

    keep going inshaAllah
    wasalaamu ‘Alaikum
btw, I got the imam’s permission to sell his lecture and I’m trying to find time to design and print the dvd case/labels and burn it all together…inshaAllah make du’a…wasalam.

  21. abo faress Says:

as salam aliokm u know its funny how people leave the big picture here and focus on smaller things if this is the way we goign to deal with brothers that are trying their best to serve the deen even if we disagree with small things how we going do call non practicing muslms to to islam . sister i tihnk u need to learn the manners to speak to ur brothers even if u disagree with them and since u have a family is better to focus on them and ur house instead of insulting ur fellow muslms. its better to focus on ur house allah yasstooreek wa yabareek feekii
    salam alikom
jazak allah khair brother belaal good videos inshallah

  22. Sister Says:

Brother Belal knows exactly why I spoke the way I did. And I don’t wish to expose anything here.

If you wish to accept constructive criticism since you always like to give advice, here’s a piece of advice:
Re-evaluate everything you do in light of the Sunnah and see if it is compatible. Wallahi, making a video of you playing chess or climbing the hill up to the HOLLYWOOD sign (of all things!).. well, do I really need to explain? How in the world is that promoting Islaam? Showing Muslims in your videos does not automatically mean it’s an “Islamic framework.” I’m tired of people throwing the “da’wah” label on anything they do. It is unfair to the true da’ee’s who actually learn their deen, sacrifice much, and dedicate their time to teaching people.

Do not let the shaytaan fool you in keeping you busy with that which is unbeneficial.

And “another sis,” I know who you are and you know VERY well there is more behind my message than meets the eye.

    Assalamu alaikum.

  23. AlBaraa Says:

    @Sister,

Jazakallahu khairun for sharing some insight – and you’re welcome to continue to do so.

Would you agree with me if I said >> “Working within an Islamic framework and promoting Islam are two different things.”

The Browntourage series isn’t at all a dawah video. It’s simply a sharing of my trip experiences in a short entertaining manner with some bits of value in it. That’s it.

I’m not calling to anyone or anything. I personally find that sharing my trip experiences and some of the people I met along the way as a great way to engage the people I’m targeting and connecting with others — all while keeping within the bounds of what Allah-swt has deemed correct (at least to what I’ve been taught and understanding)…

…which ultimately allows for better personal connection with the market I’m trying to influence (which is a benefit worth spending time on for me).
    – –
As for you’re statement about climbing up Mt. Lee (where the Hollywood sign is) – Perhaps its best to hold judgments back before understanding why. Having the words “subhanAllah leave your mouth upon seeing this view alone is worth the effort of the climb:

This discussion is a perfect example of the 10-80-10 rule. Just thought I’d drop by to say: Keep up the great work.

  25. AlBaraa Says:

Jazakallahu khairun for the reminder – point taken.

“This discussion is a perfect example of the 10-80-10 rule. Just thought I’d drop by to say: Keep up the great work.”

Please can you expalin this rule? A

lso, I think there is benefit in climbing up those hills Belal. It really helped me look and wonder at the creation of Allah azzawa jal and what he has created, and only he knows what he has prepapred in jannah for those fortunate enough to see it. I tried putting it as a screensaver but it’s too small.

    Wa’aalikum salaam wa rahmatullah.

  27. Naveed Says:

I was disappointed to see some of the harsh comments here.

Belal, you are doing an amazing job by promoting professional media production and we Muslims need to be adept at it. I don’t think you touted Browntourage as a “da’wah” video – so any criticism in this regard is baseless.

Three words that come to my mind:

    (1) Professionalism, (2) Quality and (3) Tawfeeq.

    And also, Cool :)

    Great job bro!

  28. Akhi Says:

    Goo Belal!

  29. Gracefullioness Says:

    @akhi

Here’s a brief explanation of what the 10:80:10 rule means:

-10% of your customers/audience are easy to please and will love your product 99.9% of the time.

-80% of your customers/audience will be indifferent towards your product.

-10% of your customers/audience will hate your guts and hate your product no matter what you say or do. Deal with them with respect and just move on!

  30. faizan Says:

wow….subhanAllah….the chess was there for like 0.000234534 seconds……May Allah forgive us all for the sins we do knowingly and unknowingly. ameen thumma ameen.

  31. Akhi Says:

I’ve heard about this before, why is chess haram? Or at least why do some see it as haram? Backgammon as well.

    Jzazakhallah khair,

  32. Muslim Says:

Here is something on IslamQA.com about it. There are difference of opinions on the matter:
