When we were making our independent feature, <a href="www.liarsandlunatics.com" title="Liars and Lunatics, a Moon Brothers film" rel="nofollow">Liars and Lunatics</a>, we did a lot of research before getting our boom mic. We didn't realize how good it really was until we were in the middle of filming one day. The batteries started to run out of juice, thus making a slight buzzing sound. (We didn't even realize that the mic had batteries!) While we were scrambling to fix the problem of the batteries, we switched to another mic. Our sound mixer couldn't get over how inferior the new mic was! Needless to say, we decided to get all our MOS shots and go to lunch early. We finally got a battery replacement so we could use the good boom mic again. Overall, we very pleased with the sound and glad we chose to pay a little extra for a better microphone.
