Have You Tried Microsoft Silverlight?

Reading time: < 1 minute

The other day a friend of mine was telling me about Microsoft Silverlight and stated that it’s a “Flash Killer.” This interested me in the sense that, being in a field were media is the main for of communication, I’m always looking out for different vehicles that might help me get results faster than I’m currently getting them.

I figured I’ll ask you all about it. So…give me your thoughts about this program :D

Compared to Flash 10 (coming soon), Silverlight is in its infancy. I would not suggest it.

Adobe MAX conference in Chicago had a presentation of their Flash 10 software. Its pretty cool what the new features can do:

I’ve heard of it, but I haven’t tried it. It’s something that is “Flash-like”, but I don’t know about it being a Flash-killer. That sounds a bit over the top. When I see major Web 2.0 or 3.0 sites start using it over the installed base of Flash, then I’ll revisit that assertion. ;)

The obvious problem with this is that it is restricted to the Windows platform. Additionally, Microsoft has intentionally restricted the permission to use Silverlight technology on GNU/Linux platforms (e.g., Fedora, which is what I use) to a limit set of circumstances.

While the technology might be amazing, these restrictions are truly unsettling and will eventually lead to its limited adoption only in markets where Microsoft is dominant, which are growing fewer & fewer in number. Also look for future releases of Silverlight to only support Vista, as opposed to the rest of the Windows family. This would alienate anyone that chooses not to upgrade to Vista. These are all tactics Microsoft has become known for.

Sorry to be such a downer…:-p
