I decided (upon listening to advice) that I'm not going to blog about the music issue here. Rather what I plan to do is discuss the issue and relay my information with the folks over at MessageMastery.com mainly because they'll be dealing and working with such material.

Looking forward to the posts. I recall a question you asked Shaykh Yasir Qadhi on the AlMaghrib forums on this issue back in 2005, too.

I'm still unsure in the case of synthesizers and where it would fall. I can assume that since the synthesizer in and of itself is a musical instrument (I maybe wrong). A musical instrument that produces a natural sound is still haraam due to the fact that it comes from maa'zif. Allahu Alam.

For the record, sh Yaser didn't metion that voices simulating instruments are haraam, rather he simply expressed his personal dislike for it. It was in reference to a tape someone once handed him and he stated as to why someone would spend their time doing this (we were there when he mentioned it Evolution of Fiqh). As for the madhab of AdDharee'ah, its based out of literalism, and it isn't the stronger of the scholarly opinnion. Allahu Alam.

Keep an eye out once the posts come forward :-)

AlBaraa', you should know better than that - we took Usool Al-Fiqh in Durbah together! It can be argued that similar sounds to instruments would be (and are) forbidden according to the madhhab of Imam Ahmad by siddu li dharee`ah, or "blocking the means". That is to say, if we simulate the sound of musical instruments with, say, voices, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that we would start being more lax on other aspects - such as using synthesizers, but with the "sound" being the human voice, etc.

For the record, Shaykh Yaser Birjas mentioned during one of our classes that voices simulating instruments are also forbidden - I believe beatboxing may fall under this category, because the purpose is to explicitly simulate musical instruments and their associated sounds - some examples of which are strikingly similar to the real thing.

Having said all of that, I am looking forward to your future posts on the issue as you have obviously studied the issue and may know something that I don't. I've chosen to stay as far away from music as much as possible due to the strong prohibition on instruments.

The general prohibition isn't on the sounds, rather its on the use of "Ma'azif" which is defined as "musical instruments" Sounds that are produced from elements that are not musical instruments by themselves (ie; mouth) aren't included in the prohibition.

I'll be making a series of posts about what I've learned about from on the "music issue" from my teacher and some of the books I've been instructed to read on the topic in the near future inshaAllah that sheds some light on the topic inshaAllah.

If something sounds exactly like musical instruments, why isn't it banned as well? Because you only hear music, and if it all sounds the same, and you are saying one is not allowed but the other is doesn't seem logical at all. Oh well, just my two cents.
