I Didn’t Buy That Canon Camera!

Reading time: 2 – 4 minutes

Which camera am I talking about?

A couple weeks ago I made a post about the Canon FS100 and HF100, one of which I reviewed. Read about it here:

After going back and forth I was undecided on which camera to purchase. Here’s what I had going for each camera when compared head to head:

Canon FS100 Pros:

  • Cheap! Close to $300
  • I could add extra accessories like the Steadicam Merlin and Lavaliere Microphone for the extra cash
  • Easy editing

Canon FS100 Cons:

  • No manual audio gain control
  • No HD (not really a con at this point in time)
  • No lens attachment feature (I fixed this with a lens adapter)

Canon HF100 Pros:

  • Has HD (but wont be using it really)
  • Had manual audio gain control
  • Can add lens to it without and fiddling

Canon HF100 Cons:

  • $600+ causing me to go out of budget with other accessories

So what did I purchase?

Canon FS100

Transcend 8GB & 16GB SDHC Flash Cards

Lens adapter with 52mm to 37mm step down ring

Audio Technica ATR-35S Lavaliere Mic

Tiffen Steadicam Merlin Camera Stabilizer

I’ll be posting about my experiences with this camera and how well the steadicam merlin performs after this weekend. I’m also planning on doing a head to head comparison of the Merlin with the $14 steadycam I built and tested here: http://www.leechon.com/14-steadycam-9.htm

If you have any questions of comments to share go ahead post them before the end of the weekend. :D

Maa shaa? Allaah walhamdulillaah! I’m so glad that you finally got something. We’re still waiting for some sample footage. ;)

Incidentally, I disagree with your assessment that HD is not something you’ll be using (and therefore, isn’t a notable feature for your comparison). Cost, of course, is always a factor, so I won’t argue that point. But EVERYTHING is going in the direction of HD. Having just discovered Vimeo, they are now featuring HD, and the results are great – even allowing people to download the ORIGINAL HD videos that were uploaded.

Moreover, sites like YouTube and others are, at a dinosaur’s pace, moving in the direction of HD. And, with HD, you get awesome SD quality videos if you just scale it down.

Yes, editing AVCHD video is still a pain, so any MPEG2-based video will be an order of magnitude easier to edit due to its existing legacy.

Finally, I’m really interested in knowing how the lapel mic works out for you – any HQ samples, say, Qur’aan recitation or speeches you’re willing to share? I was looking to buy from the AT822 condenser mic family, but at around $100, that probably is way beyond your budget at this stage. My purpose is for recording the audio only (of course!), not really for video.

HD is something I PERSONALLY won’t be using soon. Its not MY bread winner :-)

As for Vimeo, commercial aspect is missing. I can put up HD video for the purposes of getting a video out there to share, but for commericialization its not really good. With YouTube if one is a partner, they have the commercial option available to them (but only in sub-SD for now). YouTube is a good indicator of how fast the regular joe is accepting HD.

I haven’t really gotten to use the mic extensively yet, so no real samples for now.
