The head-on camera works fine, so long as the speaker is speaking directly to the camera. Naturally that is very difficult to do, especially when one doesn't have a lot of practice doing it.

In an event setting, the speaker is speaking to many different people, therefor a head-on camera isn't really of much benefit. The advantage of having an angular setting is that when one has multiple cameras, the difference in range shows and gives more of a dynamic feel.

At the same time, you don't want to get too close. The reason for any close up would be to give forth emotion. If there is a part where the speaker is really telling an account of something then you move into a close-up, but beyond that, you want to keep to a medium close-up to a medium shot. This gives a feeling of conversation and at the same time isn't too far away.

As for the viewer feeling connected to the speaker, that mostly has to do with what the speaker is saying, and how they are saying it. Doesn't matter how well the camera work is, if the speaker doesn't do their job, then it work really enhance the 'connection'.

Asalaam Aleikum Warahmatullah Wabarakatu,

Why a 45 degree camera angle rather than head-on?

I thought the viewer feels more connected to the speaker when the view is 1) Close-up and 2) Head-on (in order to make direct "eye contact").
