Muslims in Acappella…in English!

Mus·lim A·cap·pel·la
–adverb, adjective Music.

  • Someone adhering to the faith of Islam and without instrumental accompaniment sings songs of benefical nature that have reminders of good character, faith, hereafter, and encouragement of good deeds.
  • **note; In modern usage, a cappella often refers to an all-vocal performance of any style

I guess I can call this a follow up Spotlight to my earlier post on “Naturally Seven“. Saqib recently made a post about Muslims in A cappella. (Its funny when you read that knowing the word “A cappella” comes from Italian meaning “in the chapel”. Read up on A cappella on wikipedia to know what I mean.)

Islamtoday.com has an interesting read on Music in Islam and the opposing arguments. — Just a reminder, this is a spotlight post. Not a post for debate and discussion on fiqh issues (such posts will be deleted). If you want to know more about the issue, consult a person of knowledge. Not me, and not your friend on your gmail chat list (unless he/she happens to be a person of knowledge).

After reading Saqib’s post, I decided to check out YouTube and see what creative works I can find that have Muslims doing A cappella. The following is what I found…

786 feat. Aman | Make Dua

Zain Bhikha feat. Dawud Wharnsby | Allah Knows

Yusuf Islam (formally Cat Stevens) | A is for Allah

and my favorite…

Ahmed Bukhatir | Forgive Me

Forgive Me always manages to bring a lump to my throat. Its an excellent reminder of how ungreatful we tend to be, and the amazing blessings we have that we many times take for granted.

If you can find any other creative works of Muslims in A cappella (professional or not), go ahead and post it in the comments. I’d love to see it!

I thought I showed you that before? Their on youtube too…they’re beats sound like 2pac (from back in my day) but that’s just my opinion. They had some more songs on their myspace but they changed them up a day after I found them.

By the way, the name of their album is “Music is Haraam” :D

Also I heard Immortal Technique (one of the most legendary political rappers today) converted to Islam so there could be something coming from there one day… ?

some old ones i remember: Dawud Wharnsby Ali’s Children of the World (my personal fave), and Ahmad Bakhtair’s Last Breath

i don’t know if the UK-based group, Shaam, could be included…they’re acappella for the most part of their songs but do use percussion now and then

I’ve read Ahmed Bukhatir’s Forgive Me as a poem … I never knew it was a nasheed. It is truly a reminder. JazaakumAllahuKhayrun for the posting…really makes you think

Here is a great link about these type of nasheeds:

The scholars give their opinions, so it’s not from a layman making up stuff. Read and reflect please.

    Assalaamualaykum,
You had linked a thread on the AlMaghrib forums about music… did you go over the book with your teacher? Do you have more posts on the topic of music?
    JazakAllahkhair

  9. AlBaraa Says:

I did read the book and did go through it with my teacher, but I haven’t made any posts about it. I will be covering it in the Message Mastery (secrets of video production) program. Perhaps I’ll make a post about it for everyone to read.

  10. Khadijah Says:

Will you be making a post [about this] any time soon?
