Nikon Releases The First REAL Photo-Video Camera

Reading time: 1 – 2 minutes

Nikon recently released the D90 which is the first in its own category. Its a camera that takes amazing still photos and has the ability to shoot real HD video footage.

Watch the video that the New York Times released about the camera and what it can do here: New Photo Revolution

After having watched that video I’m really excited to see what other cometitors such as Canon and Sony come out with. This is really going back to the origins of motion picture photography. Lumiere brothers simply made their camera take 16 pictures every second. I can’t wait till the day they have 50 megapixel (theortical size of 35mm film) cameras shooting at a solid 120+ frames per second.

This is definitely a great step forward for imaging. I couldn’t watch the video in the nytimes website due to incompatibility with Fedora, but I was able to download and watch a video off of the Nikon website. The video quality is definitely impressive, potentially on-par with other existing consumer HD options. But they didn’t provide a full quality video, rather, they only had a low resolution, low-quality FLV file that was a mix of stills & motion video.

Actually, I was not amazingly impressed by the STILL images taken by this camera. Nikon has a reputation of amazing color capture and high-quality lenses, and it seems that this model is lacking in these two strong areas. Therefore, as you mentioned, I’m looking forward to seeing what comes from their competitors as well.

Naturally, we should be a bit more forgiving for the first run at this type of synergy. I commend Nikon on taking the first step. I hope the other manufacturers DO follow suit.

Also, some pro photographers took the camera for a spin. Check it out here:

I have to say, at first, I was not impressed by this. Then I saw the Chase Jarvis video. Wow.

Totally blown away. But will it be a replacement ever?

    Replacement?

I doubt it. The main purpose of a still camera is to take still photos. Similarly, cell phone cameras will never out do other point-n-shoot cameras b/c the fundamental purpose of a cell phone is to make calls.

I think this is a great item for photographers who want to get into photos or want something that does both photo and video well IMHO.
