you know, thats what i think is really freaky......about how advertisers sometimes go after children even when there a few years old.......i read somewhere that brand addiction sometimes starts as early as age two....like a kid says id rather drink coke then pepsi....you're right.....its everywhere and it seems like advertisers attack us at such a young age that they make us their customers for life even before we can tell that 2+2=4.....

SubhanAllah......May Allah increase our quest for the truth. Ameen.

Yeah, I agree about the product placement thing. When i first watched Cast Away....i was told beforehand that Tom Hanks was best friends with a vollyball named wilson and that he was saved by a fed ex package. lol....its everywhere....

oh no, i dont propose that subliminal persuasion doesnt work at ALL.....i just dont agree with the notion that you can control others with subliminal persuasion. that was one of the biggest scares when advertisers started using subliminal persuasion in movies and such when it first came out. people started getting scared that they were being controlled by the advertisers so now there's a ban on using subliminal messages in advertisements and such. it was all a big hoax, because the studies that were done showed that there really wasnt much mind controlling going on.....however, i do agree that subliminal stimuli have some degree of influence over people. for example, a person by the name of morris eagle flashed subliminal images of a buy either angrily throwing a birthday cake or presenting the cake very nicely. when people were shown a picture of the same boy in a neutral position, those who were exposed to the subliminal images of him throwing the cake angrily evaluated the boy in much more negative terms.....so yeah, i do agree that subliminal images have some effect on us....

SubhanAllah....i love psychology....so interesting:)

yeah, i've seen some of derren brown's videos.....there very very interesting....

Perhaps it's not so much about what it does to stimulate the brain. Part of the agenda of product placement is to get your name out there. to make your product seem popular and seem so part of everyday life and the culture that it's just "coincidentally" in the movie. That way they try to create brand recognition and say you watch ET then you go to the store and have a candy craving.. I wouldn't be surprised if people picked up a Reece's.

Companies (especially big companies) like Fed Ex, Coke, Etc. They could virtually go without doing any advertising at this point and not lose any money.. The reason they advertise is to remind people they are out there, and to win over any people from competing brands with emotional appeal tied to their advertisements.

Br. Abu Talha, that's a really interesting point you brought up especially because it was done with research. I'd actually really love to study subliminal advertising more. But I don't necessarily agree that it doesn't work all together. I think they definitely add something to our subconscious minds. I prob. would agree that it prob. wont affect a person too much to the point in which after they watch something they'll automatically go buy the product. but as we saw in the Derren Brown video, it;s just one more idea, thought or product that is familiar to us.. while we actually have no idea (as crazy as it seems).

(by the way all the Derren Brown videos are really cool) you can find a lot of youtube. He doesnt claim to be a magician or whatever he tells people straight up he's a fake, but it all has to do with psychology and NLP stuff. (really freaky stuff , but really cool)

you know....i was read a book by Dr. Richard Wiseman Ph.D. called "Quirkology".....it had a whole section about subliminal stimuli....and it was all actually based on science....basically, it says that it doesnt work. There was an experiment conducted on a group of people that were exposed to subliminal stimuli such as the words "drink coke" were flashed in a movie so quick that they couldnt tell it was there. The noted that after the people watched the movie that coke sales actually went up. However, there was a problem with the study: it didnt have a large amount of people.....there werent enough people to make a valid conclusion.....but the study was published in terms of percentage (i.e. 40% of people who watched movie bought more coke)........so later on there was another scientist by the name of Melvin DeFleur who conducted another experiment with a much larger group of people....and the results were that subliminal messages didnt really have any effect on people.....in one case he was trying to persuade people to watch a certain TV show and the percent of ppl that watched the show actually dropped after the experiment.....it really is a good book and very interesting....just some info on subliminal perception :)

Its funny, I never realized that Wilson and FedEx were blatent product placement. I think they fit it quite well into the story. I never thought about it like that.

One question comes to mind…how much do advertisers pay to have it placed into the show or movie? Rather, how much of the movie’s financial budget is based off of the amount it gets for product placement?"

It depends on the show, timing, number of viewers, demographics that watch the show. there's obviously a lot of research that goes into it. you're not going to advertise Lysol on ESPN. (if they do.. not very smart).

For instance I found this:
"Coke paid $26 Million for American Idol Panel to Display Coke Cups"

Oh and how about Reece's Pieces in ET... that's classic... I actually found this online:

"The decision to feature Reese's Pieces in ET catapulted the product-placement craft into the Hollywood mainstream. Reese's Pieces leapt onto kids' mental menus and sales shot up 65%; Mars, the maker of M&Ms, had passed on the opportunity."

So I guess it works...
