Who said you can’t make good music without instruments?

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

A lot of Muslims these days are so lazy and uncreative that they are willing to compromise on their deen under the clause of “necessity.”

People purchase homes based on interest because they say its a necessiety to have a roof over your head.

Understood. You HAVE to have a roof over your head and provide for your family, but who said you have to OWN that roof if you can’t afford it?

When it comes to the realms of entertainment and media, a lot of Muslims who follow the opinion that musical instruments aren’t permissible – especially string instruments, tend to compromise on that area as well.

Whatever happened to breaking the “rules” of entertainment and doing things in a creative and unique way that was along the lines of Islamic principals?

This spotlight is dedicated to Naturally Seven.

Naturally Seven is a HipHop-R&B-A’cappella group out of New York. The following was taken from: http://www.singers.com/gospel/seven.html

Naturally Seven use neither instruments or samples for any of this! The seven vocal giants have found a wonderful way to exploit the variety of their styles– with a self-directed irony, they dramatize their competing musical interests as comedy.

The following video is of them performing in the Paris Metro:

The following is their new music video called “Feel It”

how come there is a guitar and a drum set in the second video?

  2. AlBaraa Says:

I can guess that its to show the artistic irony of the video. In the case that one would assume that they want to use instruments in the song, but at the song progresses, the instrument props fade away, showing they weren’t using instruments to being with.

SubhanAllah. Allah-swt’s creation is far superior to man’s psudo-creation. Amazing how one’s voices can produce such sounds

  6. Confused Says:

I’m not sure I get it, if we can somehow find a man that is capable of making sounds that sound exactly like instruments, we can sample and use him to give us a library of music that sounds no different from instruments?

Is computer generated music then ok, because no strings are actually involved?

  7. AlBaraa Says:

Im not a scholar on this subject, and I’ve only begun to read up on it. The basic premise is that the sounds have to come from a source that is permissible. (there’s a lot more to it and inshaAllah when I start my book study with my teacher on the subject I’ll post the result here).

If its from the mouth its all good. Allah-swt has allowed it. Most instruments out there that they use, are not allowed according to the major scholars of Islam.

  8. CONFUSED Says:

To say that peoples voices that somehow can sound exactly like instruments or synthesized sounds that can do the same are ok, but other music is not sounds a bit Yahoodi-ish, like how they wear wigs but cover their own hair and consider it a hijab.

  9. AlBaraa Says:

I’m not gonna go into details b/c frankly I don’t have the knowledge.

I think the song is a cover and not an original. That’s a little disappointing as I was hoping for some unique stuff. But whatever. Iz they Mozlems?

Regarding the “vocal music” thing I did hear Sh Yasir Birjas say a few negative words about an album that sounded exactly like instrumental music but only used human voices. He didnt exactly give a fatwa only disapproval.

The human voice is indeed far superior than musical instruments.

  12. MR Says:

So basically we just have to record our voices making unique sounds and then digitally engineer it to sound like a real song that uses instruments but everything is generated from the mouth.

I’d like to see a good scholarly approach to this, becuase this is music.
